Overview

The video games industry presents an exciting and rapidly growing opportunity for actors skilled in motion capture performance. But what does it take to bring characters to life in this medium? How do you adapt your craft for motion capture technology?

This intensive three-day course will equip you with the essential skills needed to perform for motion capture. Whether you’re an actor looking to expand your skill set, diversify your CV, or add new techniques to your repertoire, this hands-on course will give you a strong foundation.

Training will take place in our 30-camera VICON Motion Capture Volume at our Southend-on-Sea campus. The course will run from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on each day.

Meet the course facilitator 

This course will be led by Tom Linden-McCarron.

Tom Linden-McCarron is a performance director with 20 years of experience in the industry. He has performed and directed in Motion Capture, Screen and Voice Over, and has an established history of working with training, graduated, and established actors for Motion and Performance Capture.

Tom uses different acting techniques to help actors achieve their best performance and has worked as a performance director with East 15, Target3d, Centroid, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Central Film School, BBC, SKY and more.

Acting for Video Games: Motion Capture Short Course

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction

  • Learn essential motion capture terminology
  • Understand how your performance is recorded and translated into digital characters
  • Create characters using various acting techniques
  • Explore the difference between playable and non-playable characters

Day 2: Locomotion

  • Create and refine “walk cycles” for different characters while wearing full mocap suits and headsets
  • Embody character movement and use physical storytelling bring characters to life
  • Develop the technical proficiency needed for locomotion shoots
  • Begin integrating script work in preparation for cut scene performances

Day 3: Cut Scenes

  • Rehearse and perform video game cut scenes
  • Refine movement quality and physical storytelling
  • Improve vocal delivery to complement physical performance
  • Deepen understanding of character psychology and in-game context

The course will run from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on all days.

Who is this course suitable for:

This course is designed for actors looking to develop new skills and gain experience in Motion Capture. A background in performance is ideal, whether in theatre, film, TV, digital media, or physical theatre.

  • Some acting experience is required due to the fast-paced nature of the course
  • This course is suitable for those without experience in digital media, but not for complete beginners
  • Participants must be comfortable with movement and wearing form-fitting mocap suits that they will need to change in and out of.
