Ladies and Gentlemen, please take your seats. Tonight’s performance of the worst production of Macbeth in the history of theatre is about to begin…
Peter O'Toole's infamous production of Macbeth at London's Old Vic in 1980 has gone down in theatre legend as the worst production of Shakespeare's great tragedy ever. Possibly the worst production of anything. Anywhere.
'Heroically ludicrous', The Daily Mail
'Gruesome', The Times
'As subtle as a battering ram', The Guardian
'Don't trust those reviews. The spectacle is far worse', The Sunday Times
But the reasons why such a disaster was allowed to unfold are almost as ludicrous as the disaster itself. Inspired by this true story, O'Toole's Macbeth is a new comedy which combines fact, fantasy, Shakespeare and slapstick.
