East 15 Radio Plays Broadcast on the BBC

East 15 students on the Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Acting for TV, Film and Radio programme took part in a joint BBC/East 15 project as part of BBC RaW.

BBC RaW culminated in three ten-minute plays that were broadcast on Monday 28h August on BBC Radio Essex, 103.5FM, 95.3FM and DAB Digital Radio. Web users of the BBC website were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite ending of one of the plays, The Coggleshaw Quads. The winning ending was broadcast over the weekend, along with the other plays.

The project was part of an initiative to discover new radio playwrights and, with help from Shabina Aslam (BBC Radio) and the BBC Writers' Room, three new writers were brought in to work with students on this NCDT accredited degree. Under the guidance of Gordon House (former Head of BBC Radio Drama), Edward Hicks (Head of Media at East 15), the writers Terri-Ann Brumby, Shelia White and Marie James worked for three weeks improvising and character building with the students.

The scripts had to tackle a local Essex-based issue and were recorded at East 15's new Radio Studio at their Hatfields Campus in Loughton, engineered by East 15's Media Support Technician James Redington and directed by Gordon House.

Edwards Hicks said: 'This was a fantastic opportunity for E15 and our students. This great collaboration provided them with a great learning experience. We are delighted the plays are to be broadcast by the BBC as everyone involved worked very hard on this project'
